By Ory Zik

Energy Points today officially unveiled EnergyPoints™ Integrated Reports – the industry’s first application that enables businesses to issue one sustainability report that clearly conveys BOTH the financial and environmental impact of a company’s total resource consumption (electricity, water, transportation, material etc…).

Environmental performance has emerged as a critical driver of shareholder value and customer loyalty and has become intertwined with commercial success. According to the Governance & Accountability Institute, 53 percent of S&P 500 companies disclosed environmental, social and governance data in 2012 – up from 20 percent in 2011. The study also found that companies issuing sustainability reports attracted more investment dollars, and offered shareholders a better return than competitors that failed to report.

Given the financial, investor and customer benefits – why aren’t there more companies doing this? There are many companies offering analytic dashboards, but Energy Points is the first company to address the five primary challenges that have precluded us from measuring environmental impact in a way that is both accurate and simple:

Confusing Units of Measurement – The units currently used to measure environmental performance are not intuitively clear to most people and lack a frame of reference for cross-measuring (kWh, BTUs, gallons, tons, etc…).

Removing Resource Silos – Current sustainability reports separate each energy category based on environmental specialty and unit of measure.

Accounting for Resource Location and Time – The majority of sustainability reports use averages which can lead to wrong conclusions. Environmental impact needs to be measured according to the resource scarcity in the location and time its being consumed. Water consumed in a desert has a greater impact than it being consumed in a watershed.

Energy Efficiency vs. Renewable Energy – Renewables and energy efficiency are traditionally kept in separate categories – despite having the same effect of reducing energy.

Carbon as a Reporting Metric – Despite the importance of reducing greenhouse gas as a critical issue, carbon is a non-intuitive metric. Used as a management metric, carbon leads to ineffectual decision making.

Integrated Reporting in Action – Intel

There are several forward-looking companies that are moving towards a combined financial and sustainability reporting model – let’s look at Intel as an example (fig. 1). Intel’s report is comprehensive and transparent – but until now, there was no common metric that allows them to actually quantify the sustainability part of the report. While we’re not working with Intel, we like their approach to highlighting financial and sustainability metrics in one report.

Figure 1. Intel’s 2011 CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) report (Intel).[i]

Intel deserves a lot of credit for their report – the top section describes all of the financials and is easily understandable by executives, customers and investors. Any revenues generated are converted into US dollars so the reader doesn’t have to use a currency calculator to figure out what the total amounts were.

Now look at the environmental section. It’s transparent, but what does it really tell you? Here is a perfect example of the five challenges we discuss above. The units are not intuitive and have no common denominator (kWh, gallons, tons of waste, etc…). What exactly does it mean that Intel used 5.3 billion kWh of energy, 8.3 billon gallons of water and created 35.5 billion tons of chemical waste? How does one compare to another? Is it good? Is it bad?

What if we added in this question: where was the water and electricity consumed? Surely it matters if you’re using thousands of gallons of water in the desert as opposed to a location where water is plentiful. And how can the executive team use the carbon line as a management metric? Intel emitted 1.4 million metric tons of CO2 in 2011 – what decision can be made off of that simple metric?

Simply put, these numbers do not provide a full picture as to whether these initiatives are impactful beyond a cost-reduction standpoint. Businesses need to be able to track environmental and financial efficiency by integrating these different resource silos with one universal metric.

Now let’s look at the same report using EnergyPoints Integrated Reports (fig 2). Powered by the Energy Points Platform, the new application converts all energy resource domains into a single, common unit of measurement, based on the primary energy used to generate each resource. Life cycle analysis, resource scarcity, emissions and stress are accounted for to generate the true value of consumed natural resources (for more on the science behind it, please click here).

Fig. 2: Intel CSR using EnergyPoints Integrated Reports – Demonstration Only

The Integrated Intel report now clearly shows the efficiency of each resource silo. Despite consuming more electricity, Intel was much more efficient in its energy use in 2010 than it was in 2009 or 2008. The difference between usage and efficiency is because Energy Points enables Intel to account for renewable energy use. The same holds true for water usage – Intel actually used MORE water in 2010, but did so in a much more efficient manner.

Using the water example – how were we able to determine that their water usage was more efficient year over year? Here lies the beauty of Energy Points and how we normalize all resources as one metric. The Intel report provided information on the location of where water was consumed. Using advanced analytics and data mining, Energy Points factors in the available water sources, local scarcity, and energy required to generate water use (including elevation and conveyance) to demonstrate the true environmental impact of water consumption. Looking at figure 3, the blue circles on the map represent the energy that is required to sustainably get water in the various locations, while the clear circles demonstrate the cost.

As you can see, cost and resource efficiency do not always match up – which is why cost is not a good indicator of sustainability. Energy Points is the only solution to account for the myriad of factors that make up resource efficiency. Much like a CFO uses a currency converter to account for different currencies, Energy Points accounts for the local scarcity of resources, converting the information into a universal number (like a CFO coverts to US dollars).

Fig. 3. The efficiency of water use at Intel facilities around the world.

Why is this important? PwC’s Annual Global CEO Survey recently revealed that CEO concerns over energy costs and resource scarcity are at a three-year high, with 53 percent of chief executives claiming the issues have overtaken sluggish consumer spending as one of the top threats to future growth. Intel can now demonstrate the efficiency of its resource consumption, not just the raw data.

We believe that EnergyPoints Integrated Reports can lead to greater transparency and more accurate and actionable intelligence about how companies are impacting the environment. To find out more or how it can help your company, feel free to contact us and ask for a demonstration.
